As we move into the summer season, the world itself is beginning to open up around us and I am reminded that for my Cree ancestors, the summer element is fire. With the summer solstice sun at its peak, we are nourished by the fire that sustains it. All of our relatives gather the sun’s strength and each in their own way, turn it into growth.
There is so much more to fire than nourishment though. Your inner fire is the fierce, driving force that does that hard work of accomplishing your dreams and goals, and it is the fierce driving force that can consume you and those around you.
Summer is the time to acknowledge the fire and recognize the sacred purpose of it.
Summer is the time to feed the fire so that it has the power it needs to sustain us for the coming challenges.
And summer is also the time to respect the fire and its ability to consume everything in its path by directing and managing this spectacular inner resource.
Summer is the time to recognize and celebrate the sustaining fire that has brought us here and feed the fire that will carry us forward.
This is part of a new series of mindfulness prompts that are based in Métis teachings as I know them. They do not represent every teaching, only my interpretation of the teachings I have been gifted. Each weekly post will be an image specifically designed to fit the lock-screen on your phone. The idea is that you can make mindfulness easy, effective and beautiful all at the same time. Placing each new image on your lock screen will hopefully keep it in the front of your mind and allow you enough time to lean into the learning.
