Today we entered the Frog Moon.  It is during this cycle that the earth itself begins to warm from the longer periods of sun. As it does, the warmth awakens the frogs who begin to sing the last of the slumbering creatures into the world.  The Frogs bring us many lessons but today the one that comes clearest for me is that we must remember our own place and our own gifts.

In a Métis understanding of the world, babies are born as spectacular gifts to a family and community.  It is understood that prior to crossing into this world, the person sits with the creator to plan out their own path.  The path has two purposes, learn some things and teach some things.  Each of us has our own lessons to learn and we will be faced with the same challenges over and over until we address them and build the skills we need.  But it is also important to remember that we are not placed here as a burden to the community.

In fact, as our communities and old people know, each child that comes to us, comes with a gift that will lead our people forward.  It is not the role of the community to develop or foster the gift, that has been provided by the creator.  It is the role of the community to protect and provide for the child so that they are not distracted by simple things while they teach us about their path.  So the lesson of this moon is, just as the frog was placed here with a voice and a purpose, so were you.

This is part of a series of mindfulness prompts that are based in Métis teachings. Each weekly post has an image specifically designed to fit the lock-screen on your phone. The idea is that you can make mindfulness easy, effective and beautiful all at the same time. Placing each new image on your lock screen serves to keep it in the front of your mind while the week allows you enough time to lean into the learning.
